About Hallsford Shorthorns
Hallsford, our family farm, is situated north of Hadrian's Wall and just south of the Scottish Border in Northern Cumbria. This is an area known as the 'Border Reiver Country', where 400 years ago rustlers and outlaws terrorised the Anglo Scottish frontier having allegiance to the cross border clans as opposed to the crown. Farming and border raiding were the principle sources of income. Today farming, by and large, is still the main activity.
Hallsford Farm: We have a pedigree herd of Beef Shorthorn started in 1999. Animals are run through to finishing for our retail business, Hallsford Farm Produce. This gives us a useful insight into the quality of carcases from particular genetics.
We run a flock of Llanwenog sheep, a rare breed from Mid Wales, and also finish Saddleback and Gloucester Old Spot pigs from weaners bought from local smallholders and farmers. The Lamb, Mutton, Pork and Bacon are all sold through Hallsford Farm Produce.
The 180 acre farm is 'half way up the hill' and run on an extensive basis. The breeds suit the farm. Hallsford is run with the help of our young children, Catherine, Matthew and Emma.
